Garnet refers to a family of gemstones which includes several types of stones of identical crystalline structure and the best known of which are those of red color, namely pyropes, almandines and rhodolites.
Where does the word “Garnet” come from?
The word "garnet" comes from the Latin "granus" which means "grain", in reference to the rounded shape of its crystals.
What are the colors of Garnet?
Garnet is a family of gems which can be very varied in color.
Pyrope is red in color, usually tinged with brown.
The almandine is also red in color but tends towards purple.
Rhodolite is a pinkish red variety.
As for other types of garnet, spessartite ranges from orange to red-brown and grossular can be yellow, green or brown while andradite ranges from black to yellow-brown and uvarovite is from emerald green color.
What is its symbolism?
Garnet, in particular pyrope and almandine, has long been confused with other stones such as ruby or spinel.
Today, the garnet symbolizes charity, friendship, strength, foresight and triumph, as well as births in the month of January.
Where does it come from?
The largest deposits of garnets are located in India, Tanzania and Madagascar. However, these extraction sites are general and vary according to the types of garnet.
Thus, pyrope can also come from South Africa, Argentina, the Czech Republic and Myanmar and is rarer or even impossible to find in India.
The almandine can also come from Austria while it would be rarer or even impossible to find in Tanzania.
How do I maintain my jewel set with a Garnet?
The different varieties of Garnet should be kept away from extreme temperatures, as thermal shock is likely to cause damage to the gem.
