How to clean a rough diamond
HOW TO CLEAN A ROUGH DIAMOND?
The diamond is the hardest material found on Earth. Indeed, with a rating of 10 on the Mohs scale, a diamond cannot be scratched (except by another diamond). However, diamonds require special and meticulous care to maintain their brilliance as if new. Although diamond is the hardest material, it is also extremely fragile. Common cosmetic and cleaning products, such as lotion, makeup, or cleaning products, contain chemicals that can damage your jewelry in the long run. Therefore, it is important to regularly maintain and clean your jewelry and stones like diamonds so that they do not lose their luster.
For this, Maison Lorenz Bäumer provides you with maintenance tips. For example, when you are cleaning, doing DIY, or any other activity that could damage your diamond, remember to remove your ring. Also, avoid diving with your ring set with one or more diamonds, as contact with chlorine could bleach your diamond. Greasy substances should also be avoided as they could dull your stone.
In other words, avoid any impact on your diamond at all costs, as this could damage, weaken, or deteriorate it. Thus, when storing your diamond jewelry, avoid storing it with other diamond jewelry to prevent them from hitting each other. Also, protect your metal from any impact or scratches.
Ensure diamond cleaning with chemicals
There are products specifically designed to clean your diamond ring, wedding band, bracelet, necklace, or any other diamond-set jewelry. These products offer an effective and quick solution for confidently cleaning your diamond. If your diamond is loose and not mounted on a piece of jewelry, then there are no contraindications to using this type of product. However, if your diamond is mounted on a piece of jewelry, make sure that your chemical product is compatible with the metal of your setting to avoid damage to it. Indeed, some chemical products such as chlorine, bleach, and acetone can scratch and damage certain types of jewelry. Do not hesitate to consult with qualified individuals for advice.
Clean the diamond with baking soda
You can also clean your diamond with products from your home, whether you use them in everyday life or not. Indeed, baking soda and lemon are often recommended to remove traces from your diamond and make it shine like new. For this, the same procedure as for cleaning with chemical products: be careful not to damage your setting! Indeed, baking soda and lemon are abrasive. In this sense, they will not pose a particular problem for your diamond but rather for your metal.
Using Coca-Cola or toothpaste
Other methods suggest cleaning your diamond with Coca-Cola or toothpaste. However, we advise you to be careful with the sugar that may be present in this drink. Also, these two elements are extremely abrasive and could damage your setting.
In reality, diamonds are resistant to any material, unlike other stones for which this maintenance method would be ill-advised.
Cleaning your diamond with soapy water
This cleaning method is certainly the safest and most effective you can do at home. Indeed, your jewelry, whether bracelets, necklaces, rings, or earrings, should be cleaned several times a year to preserve the quality and brilliance of your stones, including your diamonds. But as explained previously, you must pay particular attention to your jewelry so as not to damage it.
In this sense, soapy water is the perfect solution. We advise you to opt for liquid soap or dish soap, which will degrease your stone without harming your metal. It is also preferable to use soaps made from natural products.
To do this, pour lukewarm water into a bowl, then add soap. Let your ring soak in this bowl for about twenty minutes to dislodge impurities present on your jewelry and diamond. Once the time has elapsed, if you still see impurities or dirt, do not hesitate to use a brush to gently rub your stone, then rinse it with cold water, and finally dry it with a towel.
This step is necessary because it cleans your diamond and your jewelry to preserve and/or restore the brilliance and shine of your stone with delicacy.
