How to Identify a Diamond
HOW TO RECOGNIZE A DIAMOND?
In the world of jewelry, diamonds are the most standardized stones. Indeed, several variables are taken into account when evaluating their value and rarity, such as their color, cut, clarity, and carat weight, which ultimately determine the price of the stone and, consequently, the piece of jewelry. This highly coveted and appreciated stone is often imitated. Therefore, there are methods to distinguish a real diamond from a fake, which will vary depending on whether the diamond is mounted on a piece of jewelry, if it is loose, or if it is rough.
Recognizing a mounted diamond on a piece of jewelry
Identifying a diamond set in a piece of jewelry is not an easy task. Indeed, it is difficult to check its refraction because light does not pass through it as well as when it is loose. However, whether it is set in a ring, a necklace, a bracelet, or earrings, there are several appropriate techniques to identify it.
First, before any handling, make sure your diamond is clean and free of any dust or fingerprints.
The fogging
Fogging up a diamond is an effective way to distinguish a fake from a real one. Indeed, on a diamond, fog dissipates quickly, even immediately, whereas on another stone, it will remain for a little longer.
The light
Diamonds have a quality all their own: the reflection of light. Indeed, in sunlight, a diamond strongly reflects white light because the diamond reflects light. However, if this stone does not sparkle in the sun or in front of a light source, it does not necessarily mean that it is not a diamond, as it may be a lower quality diamond, but it is obvious that questions could be raised about it.
Use a magnifying glass
A magnifying glass allows you to distinguish details not visible to the naked eye. For most stones, it is advisable to examine their characteristics with a magnifying glass to check several elements and characteristics of the stones. If your stone has scratches, scuffs, or abrasions, then it is not a diamond, as diamonds do not scratch.
Identifying a diamond by itself
An unset diamond is easier to identify. Indeed, there are more meticulous techniques to determine the nature of your stone.
Use a glass of water
Fill a glass with water to put your stone in it. If your stone floats, it means it is not a diamond.
Check with a fine-tooth comb
As with a diamond set in jewelry, examine your stone with a magnifying glass for imperfections, flaws, or scratches. If it contains any, then your stone is not a diamond. Additionally, check the edges of your stone. If it has rounded or sharpened edges, rather than the pointed edges characteristic of a diamond, then it is likely a fake diamond or another stone. Indeed, diamonds have pointed, smooth, and scratch-free edges.
Test your diamond's hardness by scratching glass
Diamonds are the hardest stones. Thus, this stone is capable of scratching other materials such as glass. Therefore, take some glass and scratch it with your diamond. If the glass scratches, then it is a diamond; otherwise, it is another stone. Furthermore, the diamond is an important precious stone. Therefore, it will weigh more heavily than other precious stones.
Mirror test: check that you cannot see through the diamond
Diamonds are not transparent. Indeed, they have a high refractive index which allows them to reflect light on all their facets, thus contributing to their brilliance. If your stone is not set, you can try the experiment with a mirror or a sheet of paper and a pencil. To do this, take a pencil, draw a line, and place the stone over it. If you can see your line through it, then it is not a diamond…
Consult a certified jeweler or diamond dealer
You can then check the authenticity of your diamond at home, but if you want expert advice to avoid mistakes, we recommend you go directly to a certified jeweler or a diamond expert who will put their skills and experience at your service. Then, with a microscope or a magnifying glass, in a laboratory or not, they can attest to the specific characteristics of your stone.
Indeed, as one of the most coveted precious stones, many scams exist in the diamond market. It is therefore necessary to be careful about fraud.
To do this, pay particular attention to the color of your diamond. Indeed, when the stone has brownish or dirty colors, sellers color the pavilion or the lacquers blue to give the stone the appearance of a diamond. Then, some will play on the purity of the diamond by using lasers to remove impurities or drill holes that can be found in the stone to increase the stone's refractive index to make it shine and give it the appearance of a natural diamond.
Buying a diamond from a certified diamond dealer
If you wish to avoid these doubts and questions, we advise you to purchase a diamond from a certified diamond dealer who will provide you with an authenticity certificate for your stone, detailing all its technical characteristics (weight, color, clarity, as well as its cut), its origin, its laboratory, etc.
This certificate is unique and universal. It is the "identity card" of your laboratory-processed precious stone.
Synthetic diamonds
In recent years, synthetic diamonds have evolved significantly. Also known as lab-grown or cultured diamonds, these stones possess the same characteristics as natural diamonds, the only difference being that they are produced in a laboratory, whereas natural diamonds are extracted from mines and are therefore a product of nature. In other words, the only difference between natural and synthetic diamonds lies in their origin, but they do not differ in their technical characteristics.
The production of natural diamonds is concentrated in six countries worldwide. This natural and exhaustible resource sees its price increase each year due to extraction methods that have become much more respectful of humans and the environment. Thus, as demand continues to rise, the price of natural diamonds also increases.
Synthetic diamonds are considered to be real diamonds that challenge natural diamonds. Indeed, being cheaper and inexhaustible, these diamonds are the result of human endeavor. Produced in a laboratory, the characteristics of these diamonds are similar to natural ones and cannot be differentiated with the naked eye. In fact, their chemical composition, crystalline structure, and optical properties are identical to natural diamonds. Therefore, it is difficult to differentiate them, but you can always try the fog test on your stone, as normally, fog dissipates less quickly on a synthetic stone than on a natural one.
One should not confuse natural and synthetic diamonds, just as one should not confuse synthetic diamonds with fake diamonds. Indeed, natural and synthetic diamonds have the same composition and the same technical characteristics, whereas fake diamonds have a completely different composition from synthetic diamonds. To imitate diamonds, fraudsters use all sorts of materials such as glass, zircon, cubic zirconia, or even moissanite, a new diamond imitation introduced to the market since 1999.
Maison Lorenz Bäumer does not use synthetic diamonds and sets all its jewelry with natural diamonds from ethical and responsible production. If you wish to have a custom-made piece of jewelry (ring, earrings, necklace, or bracelet) at Lorenz Bäumer, you will then be able to choose your stones, especially for your engagement ring.
