By “opal”, we mean three different types of stones which have considerably different physical properties: the iridescent precious opals also called noble opals which are the best known, the vermilion red fire opals and the common opals.

Where does the word “Opal” come from?

The origin of the word “opal” comes from the Sanskrit “upala” which means “precious stone”.

What are the colors of Opal?

Opal can be of any color.

Precious opals, also called noble, are characterized by their iridescence, that is to say the play of colors which change according to the angle of vision. This optical phenomenon is also called "fires of the opal".

Common opals, on the other hand, do not have this play of color.

Finally, fire opals are not iridescent like common opals, but they have the particularity of their orange color which can turn red.

You should know that there is a type of black opal, very rare and sought after, which is more expensive than the diamond at equal carat.

What is its symbolism?

Today, the opal symbolizes docility, sublimation and perseverance as well as births in October (like tourmaline) and the 21st wedding anniversary.

Where does it come from?

The majority of opals are mined in Australia but large deposits can also be found in Ethiopia, Brazil, Mexico and the United States.

How do I maintain my jewel set with an Opal?

Opal is a very fragile stone with a very high water content. Some stones can break in case of dehydration and strong heat.
It is recommended to leave your opal on a cotton pad soaked in water from time to time to hydrate it.
